Training dogs to perform tricks enhance the bond between pet and owner and adds to playtime fun.
This updated book shows dog owners how to train their pets to perform simple and complicated tricks in words and pictures. After reviewing four basic commands–sit, down, stand, and stay–the book instructs on progressing to behaviors such as jump through a hoop, weave through legs, balance a biscuit, and many others. The authors present step-by-step instructions for dozens of fun tricks and offer tips and suggestions to help readers work through problems. Successful training can lead to enhanced pet therapy visits, success in talent competitions, and perhaps even a part in a local stage production. The dog-and-handler team that progresses through all of this book’s behaviors will develop talents that could lead to public performance. But even dog owners who aren’t interesting in progressing to that level can learn much from the ideas and instruction presented in this book. This new edition presents all-new photos plus a full chapter of new tricks–more opportunities than ever for dogs and handlers to have fun together.

Review

Stretch your dog to a longer and healthier life
Research on human athletes is changing what we know about stretching. For example, it is now recognized that aggressive stretching should only take place after muscles are warmed up and shortened from exertion. Authors Sasha and Ashley Foster have applied this latest research to dogs—many of whom compete in vigorous canine sporting events—so that you can learn how to safely and effectively stretch your dog to prevent injuries, maintain joint integrity, and improve you dog’s fitness whether he is an elite canine athlete or a lap dog.

Over 300 photos and diagrams demonstrate how to safely and effectively stretch each major muscle group. Teaches correct hand placement for joint stabilization and h maintain good form. Stretching routines are for large and small dogs, older dogs, and those involved in various dog sports.

Learn more about:
-How to read your dog’s body language and behavior while stretching him.
-Techniques that keep you from injuring yourself while stretching your dog.
-20 minute daily maintenance stretching routines.
-Do’s and don’ts when stretching, and when you need to consult with a vet.
-Special considerations when stretching older dogs and small or toy dogs.

What experts say about The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog:
There are a lot of stretching books, videos and DVDs out there. This is the first one I’ve seen that definitively explains why stretching needs to be done in a relaxed, prone position with correct stabilization in order for the stretch to be effective. The descriptions of the various stretches are clearly written and anatomically correct. The photographs accurately depict what is to be done. The photographs of the incredible handbook’s pricing while being stretched are alone worth the book’s price and should be an inspiration to anyone who wants to do canine body work. All praise to the authors for a great book!
Sue Ann Lesser, DVM, ACAC, CVSMT

The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog is a comprehensive, easy-to-follow guide to improving your dog’s physical health through proper stretching techniques. The book provides a wealth of information and photos to get you working with your dog right away, whether it’s for strengthening your dog’s performance in a variety of dog sports, or helping to properly maintain your senior dog’s physical health.
Mychelle Blake, editor of The APDT Chronicle of the Dog

The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog contains a tremendous amount of information. Knowing the science behind successful stretching will be a valuable resource for all dog owners. Understanding dog behavior related to therapeutic interventions and directing the reader to engage in proper body posture will allow users of this book to continue to stretch many dogs for many years to come!

Review

With their combined experience in human physical therapy, yoga, zoology, and training and showing dogs, sisters Sasha and Ashley Foster are the ideal teams to present a manual on stretching techniques for dogs. Despite recent interest in this topic, the Fosters realized that dog owners didn’t have much access to emerging information… Rather than simply informing readers that dogs can benefit from these routines, the authors explain how and why muscle tissue becomes vulnerable to injury when it remains in a shortened, contracted position. The authors have designed therapeutic canine stretching routines for each major muscle group. Noting that dogs vary in flexibility based on breed, age, and physical condition, they include detailed information on proper techniques to ensure safety and effectiveness and variations of their daily routine for small breeds and senior dogs. Every dog can benefit from stretching exercises, but they are especially valuable for canine athletes.

Review

A Book That Can Help With Introductions The observations and analyses of canine body language that are second nature to dog behavior professionals are sometimes a mystery to the owner trying to interpret the meaning of her own dog’s body signals. This just-published book joins a growing list of excellent resources to help the dedicated owner learn more about her dogs’ communication. Off-Leash’s information is comprehensible yet attainable, and the cost is within the budget of most dog owners. The book is liberally illustrated with excellent well-annotated photographs that clearly show and explain the rich variation of expressions that our dogs use as they meet, greet, and interact with each other. The text is science-based but very readable, with a clear bias toward positive training and management techniques in dog-human interactions. Although the intended audience for this book comprises professionals who work with canine playgroups, most of the information is hugely useful to anyone who has the opportunity to live in a multi-dog environment, including those looking to introduce a new canine family member to the home-pack. –Whole Dog Journal, January 2008

I am so glad. I’m delighted. My whole body is wiggling with delight. Well, if I was a dog, that’s what I’d be doing. For two reasons: That’s how dogs communicate, primarily with an extensive vocabulary of dog language (and no, they don’t automatically know what the English words “no” and “come” mean). Second, because here’s a book to teach humans what dogs are saying. If we don’t know, then we can’t be our dogs’ champions; we won’t hear if they’re trying to tell us something like I’m scared, or that dog is rude, and I might have to teach him a lesson. This little primer (though short, it doesn’t miss anything important) on off-leash dog play–really, on any interaction two or more dogs might have together–is intended for people who run doggy daycares and puppy parks. But most of it will also benefit any dog owner … because most dog owners (admit it!) don’t know that much about dog language. There’s always the ignoramus who says, Oh, my dog wants to play; as the beast stands erect and staring over your anxious pet, who’s trying her best to say, Please, someone, help me. This book is an excellent intro to what dogs are saying when they seem to be saying nothing, with lots of clear, explanatory photos and charts of stop and go behaviors, so you can intervene when necessary. Ears, tail carriage, vocalizations–if you know what these mean, you will be your dog’s best friend in return. And you can feel more assured you’re not going to end your fun session at the dog run with a trip to the vet. So here’s the operating manual that should come with every dog. And it’s the key that opens our companions’ most excellent experiences: running and playing with the pack. Educate yourself for your dog’s sake. And think of reading this book as taking a Berlitz course in a whole new way of talking. –Fetch Dog, Book Hound Dogs in Black and White, Dec 2008

A challenging foster dog inspires an experienced foster mama to explore where the endless stream of unwanted dogs is coming from—and how things could change.

After nearly a year struggling to find a home for a particular foster dog, Cara begins to wonder how the story ends—when will all the dogs be saved? Even after the one-hundredth foster dog passes through Cara’s home, the stream of homeless dogs appears endless.  Seized by the need to act, Cara grabs her best friend, fills a van with donations, and heads south to discover what is really happening in the rural shelters where her foster dogs originate.

What she discovers will break her heart and compel her to share the story of heroes and villains and plenty of good dogs, in the hope of changing this world.

From North Carolina where pit bulls fill the shelters and heart-worm rages to Tennessee where dogs are left forgotten in pounds and on to Alabama where unlikely heroes fight in a state that has largely forsaken its responsibilities to its animals, Cara meets the people working on the front lines in this national crisis of unwanted animals. The dogs, the people and their inspiring stories draw her south again and again in search of answers and maybe a dog of her own.

One Hundred Dogs and Counting will introduce the reader to many wonderful dogs—from sweet Oreo to quirky Flannery—but also to inspirational people sacrificing personal lives and fortunes to save deserving animals.

Join Cara on the rescue road as she follows her heart into the places where too many dogs are forgotten and discovers glimmers of hope that the day is coming when every dog will have a home.

Review

“Full of passion and compassion, this is an urgent and eloquent call to arms for anyone who cares about the countless dogs in the nation’s shelters every year.” — Peter Zheutlin, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of RESCUE ROAD and THE DOG WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN

“It takes not just a special writer, but a special human being to go into the darkest corners of dog rescue and tell the story with so many glimmers of hope and light. Cara Sue Achtenberg’s
One Hundred Dogs and Counting documents a journey of compassion, curiosity and faith—that knowing and sharing the truth is worth the effort, for it’s what ultimately will save so many more dogs.” — Kim Kavin, award-winning journalist, author of THE DOG MERCHANTS

“An inspiring, call-to-action story about one woman’s dedication to the solution. Through her candid and heart-warming adventures, Achterberg proves that even small acts of kindness can save lives. Her message is a beacon that shines light directly on the path to end suffering; her journey proves that together we can end the needless suffering of millions of shelter animals across the nation.” — C. J. English, author of RESCUE MATTERS

“Saddened by her emptying nest, Cara Sue Achterberg started fostering dogs—dozens of them. Here she shares the journey (and some super cute photos).”,

“Heartwarming and humorous. Achterberg fills her readers with the warmth of hope and light of inspiration, which will likely galvanize a new wave of fosters.”,
Shelf Awareness (Praise for ANOTHER GOOD DOG)

“That’s where people like Cara Sue Achterberg come into the picture.
Another Good Dog has to be the ‘feel good’ book of the year. The perfect gift.”,
Best Friends (Praise for ANOTHER GOOD DOG)

“Achterberg has in fact written another good book about dogs, but even more so she has produced a manifesto on how to change the world: through single acts of caring and compassion stacked one on top of another without end.” — Jim Gorant, New York Times bestselling author of THE LOST DOGS

“…She also throws a blinding light on the horrors of abuse and neglect occurring in some rural southern shelters, and shows how often healthy and adoptable dogs are euthanized due to lack of food, medication, and funds…This combination personal story and heartbreak
